Purpose Statement

Provide support to the instructional program within the assigned classroom with specific responsibility to assisting in the supervision, care and instruction of students in the classroom; assist in implementing plans for instruction; monitor student behavior during non-classroom time; and provide information to appropriate school personnel. 

 

This job reports to the principal.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

 

Skills are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; communicating clearly both verbally and in writing. 

 

Knowledge is required to perform basic math including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios: read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.  Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:  concepts of grammar and punctuation; stages of child development and learning styles; and age appropriate activities. 

 

Ability is required to function in a multitasking environment.  Flexibility is required to work with others and to adapt to changing operational conditions.  Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment.  Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans.  Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:  communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; working as part of a team; and working with constant interruptions; and function in high stress situations. 

 

Responsibility
Responsibilities include leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization’s services. 

 

Working Environment 

The individual who holds this position will regularly work in a school environment that is noisy and active.  There will be interruptions and high stress situations. Occasionally the individual will be required to work outdoors for short periods of time to perform such tasks as loading and unloading students from district transportation and supervising recess. The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity.  Generally the job requires 15% sitting, 60% walking, and 25% standing. 

The job is performed under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness and in a clean atmosphere. The individual may have to use therapeutic restraint.

Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
