Description | Purpose Statement The job of Coordinator of Transportation is done to direct transportation programs and services; provide information and serve as a resource to others; achieve defined objectives by planning, evaluating, developing, implementing, and maintaining services in compliance with established guidelines; and serve as a member of the leadership team.
This job reports to the Director of Operations.
Salary
Minimum $45,000; Salary commensurate with experience.
Terms of Employment
12 months (260 days).
Essential Functions
- Assesses incidents, complaints, and/or accidents to reach and/or recommend a resolution.
- Assists and maintains a complete inventory and control of the transportation fleet.
- Attends professional meetings that are pertinent to the department and district.
- Collaborates with internal and external personnel (e.g. other administrators, advisory groups, public agencies, community members, etc.) to implement and/or maintain transportation services and programs.
- Compiles data from a wide variety of sources (e.g. investigating complaints, transportation budget/expenditures, boundary planning, route designs, etc.) to analyze issues, ensuring compliance with organization policies and procedures, and/or monitoring program components.
- Coordinates student transportation activities with school officials, department heads, staff, students and parents, and other interested groups or individuals to ensure that district transportation needs are met.
- Directs department operations, the planning, cost controls, and efficiency; customer service and communication to stakeholders and the implementation of new programs and/or processes to provide services within established timeframes and in compliance with related requirements.
- Establishes work schedules for the mechanics and monitors progress.
- Evaluates each special bus trip request.
- Facilitates transportation and community meetings and workshops, etc. to identify issues, develop recommendations, support other staff, and serve as a District representative.
- Keep the superintendent informed of weather and road conditions.
- Maintains safe transportation to and from school for all eligible students. Oversees a bus safety program for grades K-5. Implements a bus evacuation drill twice yearly.
- Maintains discipline records.
- Manages the transportation department performance (e.g. on-time metrics, accident tracking, driver recruitment and retention, fleet maintenance, community complaints, etc.) to provide a safe, efficient, and effective operation.
- Performs personnel administrative functions (e.g. recruiting, interviewing, recommending, training, supervising, evaluating, etc.) to maintain necessary staffing, enhance productivity of staff, and ensure necessary department/program outcomes are achieved.
- Prepares a wide variety of materials (e.g. BOE reports, DESE information, boundary maps, transportation budget input, route report, state reporting, etc.) to document activities and issues, meet compliance requirements, provide audit references, and/or provide supporting materials for requested actions.
- Provides job-related training opportunities for drivers, bus monitors, mechanics dispatchers/routers, and/or driver trainers to ensure their job success and compliance with legal mandates.
- Recommends and helps establish effective discipline policies.
- Researches a variety of topics (e.g. new bus routes, bus schedules, new equipment/materials, bus policies, etc.) to develop new programs/services, ensure program compliance with established requirements, secure general information, and/or respond to requests.
Other Functions Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
Skills are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include leadership/supervision; strategic planning; customer service; communication; organization; operating standard office equipment including utilizing pertinent software applications; planning and managing projects; budgeting and financial management; and developing effective working relationships.
Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include planning and logistics; state and federal guidelines related to school transportation; personnel processes; pertinent codes, policies, regulations, and/or laws; education code; and budget management and accounting.
Ability is required to schedule several activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; and consider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. Independent problem-solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem-solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines, and problem-solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with parents, school personnel, and staff; meeting deadlines and schedules; working as part of a team; flexible to changing conditions; making quick and accurate decisions; dealing with frequent interruptions and changing priorities; and maintaining confidentiality.
Responsibility Responsibilities include: working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives; managing a department; and supervising the use of funds. utilization of significant resources from other work units is sometimes required to perform the job's functions. Working Environment The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 60% sitting, 20% walking, and 20% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and in a generally hazard-free environment.
Attendance Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
Experience Job-related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is required.
Education
Bachelor's degree in a job-related area is preferred.
